Nao Bustamante’s performance will riff on the Red Cross Comfort Station. She will offer personal healing, counseling, and creature comforts to everyone that stops in, with or without an appointment. I picture a cheerier, more probing, and more adventurous Lucy Van Pelt–and with better hair. Her student coordinators, Jane Holloway and Robin Riskin, will be gathering herbs, tchotchkes, and other supplies and fabricating talismans beginning on Tuesday the 17th, as well as surveying the student body for their worries and desires through questionnaires and interviews.
Jennifer Delos Reyes has invited Haverford and Bryn Mawr musicians to recreate, track for track, Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 Rumours LP. Student lo-fi bands, a cappella groups, dj’s, and staff jam bands will perform, and student designers will compete for the honor of producing a new cover. Last week, Jen’s coordinators, Julia Ryan and Charles Watanasutisas, faciliated an all-day listening party and sign-up event that was raucous and enthusiastic: they have more than 15 groups/individuals per song! There will be a release party late Thursday night, the 26th. Jen arrives on the 17th and begins her work in a Haverford recording studio immediately. The project aims to make beautiful music and repair the tabloid dramas that plagued the band during the making of the album. An homage that gives something back and makes for a revival.
Harrell Fletcher’s coordinators, Sam Kaplan and Duncan Cooper, are organizing a suite of student-run, student-documented field trips all over the Main Line: laser tag, a smithy, a 3am run to Walmart, a bowling alley, a swim, and more. These will begin Tuesday morning and end Friday morning when his crew takes a trip to the airport prior to his departure–and then they’ll celebrate their successes over dim sum. Harrell will spend much of his time “on the bus,” riding around and always on location. Each tour leader will fabricate souvenirs and zines, and the trips will be documented, blogged, and remembered. The piece aims to inculcate a be-where-you-are-but-differently-and-on-purpose ethos.
William Pope.L’s piece, ET: a Performance Shoot, will occur on Thursday, March 26th at 5:30pm. His ET draws together elements of two E.T.’s: Emmett Till and Spielberg’s Extra-Terrestrial. Here’s his description: “A fable in which a small person is thrown out into the world and meets great challenges, maybe even death, for the sake of the world.” The performance will roam through several buildings, both the grand and decrepit. It is for a live audience; and performance and audience together are for the cameras. Pope.L arrives on Sunday the 21st and begins intensive rehearsal sessions with his student stage managers, Ali King and Eli Blood-Patterson, two student videographers, lighting crew, and 11 actors. Their week will be full, stuffed, rich, and loaded.
