Mr. Till
Eli Blood-Patterson '11 | February 15, 2009ET and Emmett Till. Alienation and alienation. These themes will be central to Pope.L’s performance in March. Ever since our presentation on Wednesday, I’ve been thinking about the ability of images to connect us with a historic moment. Few pictures are more potent than the horrifying image of Emmett’s brutalized face. The now famous photograph galvanized an entire nation to act in outrage at the atrocities of first Emmett’s death and then his murderer’s acquittal. Time magazine recently ran an article showing a series of images depicting the civil rights movement, culminating in the election of Barack Obama. The first image of this series was a smiling picture of a Emmett Till. The narrative of images spanning Till’s own story—from innocence to transformed mutilation and death—carry enormous symbolic weight. They remind us both of the successes of the civil rights movement, as well as the sordid history from which our country is still recovering. Read the rest of this entry »
post-meeting thoughts
Ali King '09 |hey all,
glimpses of greatness were witnessed at our meeting on wendesday. hearing about everyone’s preliminary stunts and final projects in detail was both enlightening and fun! each project is totally unique, from pope.l’s otherworldly performance shoot, to jen’s remake of a fleetwood mac album, to nao’s comfort station, to harrell’s fieldtrips. especially exciting will be the flurry of preliminary stunts in the coming weeks, including mashup karaoke, giant birthday parties, the et^2 screening, and anonymous valentines. the air at haverford is getting more spontaneous and creative by the day. many thanks to the faculty, students and non-haverpeople who have assisted among friends so far!
thanks to john muse, here are some pics of the joyous event.
Love, Ali

We had a meeting and I was really nervous because I didn’t read Sam’s powerpoint before we presented, and it had all these sound effects so I laughed when I was supposed to be serious. We made a movie about an email Harrell sent us and one Sam sent back starring Louis from the Digital Copy Center in Stokes as Harrell.
One other funny thing that happened was the meeting was streamed live online, and when we were setting up James’ friend was already watching it and he sent James a text message saying the picture is blurry and turn up the sound. I spilled a glass of water, Jane grossed me out with some hair, we had a lot of ideas, it started to rain, and that was our meeting.
Valentine’s Day
Julia Ryan BMC | February 11, 2009Come Saturday, there are going to be seventy or so pleasantly surprised, or completely confused Haverford students. The one thing that they will have in common: All will be recipients of an ornate, loving, anonymous Valentine’s Day Card. Will you get the golden ticket? To be continued…
Bummed about the recession? Call the noncrisis line!
Charles Watanasutisas '10 |Who is Howard Trachtman? This dude helped launch Boston’s noncrisis line.
What if there was a phone line where you could just call in and talk to someone about anything? Just for a chat, or because sometimes its easier and more fun to talk to someone new who you don’t already know. There’s something along those lines in Boston, where people having difficulties can now call in and talk to peers who’ve also been through tough times. It’s a non-crisis line that addresses more mundane, everyday issues that people face. People often complain about how impersonal the modern technological world is, but I think the anonymity that sometimes characterizes our lives will in fact prove to be a benefit toward the forming of friendships and connections between people. Now we’re able to connect to people regardless of who they are, where they are, or whether we know them or not. Anyway, just a thought. I’m not with the pessimists who see the modern world as totally decrepit, and getting worse; I think it’s just getting different.
Pope.L, E.T., and Spielberg
Eli Blood-Patterson '11 |As you may not know, E.T.: the Extra-Terrestrial is going to be a big part of Pope.L’s upcoming performance. In preparation for the big day, I’ve been doing some research on Steven Spielberg, watching some of his movies and generally getting familiar with the material. Not being very familiar with his work, I was a little surprised at some of what I found. Read the rest of this entry »
